It is filled with all of the artworks and artifacts that Barragán placed in it during his lifetime, faithfully kept as they were when the residence was inhabited by its author. Recognizing the special regard the architect had for the power of these images and objects, the exhibition occupying the Casa Barragán from September 21-December 15, 2019, entitled Emissaries for Things Abandoned by Gods, aims to fill the house with the artworks of contemporary artists. All existing artworks in the Casa Barragán (including all paintings, photographs, images, copies of artworks, sculptures, and artifacts) will be temporarily replaced by contemporary equivalents or “emissaries” selected for their formal or conceptual correspondences with the originals. As an editor, I wanted to utilize this modernist text as a curatorial lens to explore contemporary art, asking primary questions, focusing on recent artistic productions from West Asia and the Gulf region. The manifesto delves into artistic and philosophical commentary on topics such as time, science, space, and language. They also critiqued art-making practices within a growing "universal" imperialist discourse. Their collective thinking, led by Kamala Ibrahim Ishaq (b. 1939, Omdurman), their teacher, resonated with existing African liberation movements of the South as well as Arab and African visual art movements from the 1960s. These movements examined post-independence art making and the challenges of modernist definitions that attempted to flatten identities, events, geographies, and cultures. Madness of the Anthropocene draws inspiration from the "no-color phenomena" within the crystal—an object seemingly colorless whose visibility emerges under pressure—that they highlight. This dual state serves as a metaphorical and literal embodiment, echoing the overarching theme of the book chapters that embrace, in other words, what I call madness as an artistic methodology for image-making today. The Studio sits on a nearly century-old site in the Žaliakalnis neighbourhood of Kaunas alongside Prapuolenis’ home and surrounding garden, which continue to be cared for by his son, Bangutis Prapuolenis. Jonas Prapuolenis was a designer, artist, and educator who interpreted the textures and qualities of local timber, and its particular, unique structures and patterns shaped by the local climate and terrain and translated its geometries into artistic furniture pieces.Photographs by Rasa Juškevičiūtė capture fragments of the studio building enveloped by a fruit tree garden, and document and reveal evidence of Jonas Prapuolenis’ practice and knowledge – design and craft processes that can be read through singular pieces of furniture stored inside the crumbling wooden structure of the workshop; his material storage and showroom filled with seasoned raw, rough timber pieces; unfinished design components; sketches on paper; bone and amber ornaments; and fine particles of dust accumulated through time. Alongside the photographs, an inserted notebook holds contributions written by Kotryna Lingienė and Aistė Dičkalnytė, which study the history of the Studio and offer a wider perspective of Prapuolenis’ life and intentions. Partecipa. Fino a trasformarsi, diventando Logy.

Not all forms of power announce themselves. It’s been called, provocative, emancipatory, cutting-edge, and even, in some places, a bit caustic. Perhaps it is provocative because it begins to depart from Marxism as-we-know-it, and, with all the relevant necessary reverences applied, it attempts, dare I say, to step forward from the discourse of labour & production—not that what follows is somehow simpler, because it’s not. Using an interdisciplinary approach that blends philosophy, erotic literature, media theory, psychoanalysis, gender studies, and neuroscience, the text explores how devices, platforms, and technologies shape and produce normative systems that influence our perceptions, desires, and relationships with others. By examining the interplay between desire and digital mediation and drawing comparisons with authors such as Deleuze, Ballard, Žižek, Butler, Preciado, Bataille, and others, this book aims to present a new theoretical, critical, and philosophical perspective in the contemporary discourse on the relationship between humans, technology, and society.
This book begins with an analysis of three iconic erotic texts from Masoch, Ballard and Bataille, and uses this analysis as the departure point for its main theoretical work on the four topics listed in the subtitle. All these innovations reprogram how we “construct” desire, which Damato redefines as statistical desire—that is, a form of desire founded on quantification, gamification, predictability, and actions we intend to perform. At a more general level, Damato shows how digisexuality is rooted in the widespread unease with contact, with bodily proxemics: the discomfort with our own skin, aversion to being touched and to touching, resulting in contact avoidance. As sensorial experience is increasingly replaced by techno-semiotic exchange, perception is reconfigured; desire itself, through the hyper-semiotization of experience, is also transformed. This shift to digisexuality changes our very perception of reality. “Physical reality exists, but it is less and less the primary object of significant investment, and also of desiring investment—a cumbersome residue that we do not know what to do with.” The body is thus “no longer essential for communication,” increasingly “an embarrassing surplus in communication, a mass that we would be pleased to get rid of.” Damato's analysis focuses on the moment when this shift occurs (and is already underway): when our body is no longer “what we are,” where our self is located, but instead is experienced as something external—so that we become more “ourselves” in digital space than in our physical bodies.” — Slavoj Žižek

About the author
Christian Nirvana Damato is a writer, curator, and independent researcher working in the fields of philosophy, technology, psychoanalysis, and visual culture.
