Live Works is a project by Centrale Fies Art Work Space, founded in 2013 as a platform for live contemporary arts by Barbara Boninsegna, Simone Frangi, and Denis Isaia who devotes himself more specifically to Collezione Fies, since the very beginning a spin-off of Live Works. In 2014, Daniel Blanga Gubbay joined the curatorial team and, together with Barbara Boninsegna and Simone Frangi, introduces the Free School of Performance into the residency course, theoretical moments that could increase the complexity and effectiveness of the commitment of Live Works in supporting the emerging performative practices. Live Works resorts to an annual open call.
The selected artists are entitled to a 20-day residency at Centrale Fies, along with curatorial, technical and production budget support for the whole duration of the work development.
A part of the residency programme consists of the Free School of Performance, which includes studio visits, critical sessions, reading groups, conversations on specific topics, and informal meetings to support the production of each project. In the end, the artists present their performances within a 3-day dedicated programme, during the 40-year-old festival of performing arts “Drodesera” inside Centrale Fies. From 2013 to 2016 an award was created, which was given by a jury conceived as a first ideal international network of presenters and curators. In 2017 this jury turned into a group of guest curators, with whom critical sessions were organised; the open call changed looks and the idea of an award was abandoned in favour of an enhancement of the Free School during the days of presentation of the works at the festival. Over the years Centrale Fies has maintained production relationships with the artists of Live Works by supporting their work after the residency period, as well.
