Amy Revier - The Blue of Distance and Attunement

The Blue of Distance and Attunement emerged from a biphasic residency by Amy Revier at CASA YALI, unfolding across two periods of research and production and resulting in two exhibitions. Both exhibitions present new bodies of work extending Revier’s longstanding engagement with handweaving into glass and other media. The first phase, The Blue of Distance, approached weaving as both a sculptural practice and a means of recording the conditions in which a work is made. Time, labour, shifts in atmosphere and the presence of others entered the woven structure through tension, repetition and gesture. The studio became an open working landscape in which textile fragments, research materials, conversations and sound accumulated alongside the work.
    Attunement is developed from Revier’s encounter with an ancient Roman glass unguentarium in the form of a bird, one of the rare surviving vessels of its kind to retain traces of its original fragrance. Revier developed a new series of works in which glass and fragrance extend questions already present within her weaving practice.
    The publication gathers the works alongside fragments, objects, images and concepts that accompanied and informed their development. Together, they form a shifting archive of the encounters, materials and conditions through which the residency and its two exhibitions came into being.
