A otto anni dalla tempesta Vaia, il fotografo Matteo de Mayda e lo scrittore Cosimo Bizzarri sono tornati nelle comunità colpite per offrire agli abitanti lo spazio e gli strumenti per raccontare e rappresentare il proprio territorio. Nel corso del 2026, grazie al Premio Basilico, de Mayda e Bizzarri hanno coinvolto circa cinquanta adolescenti tra i 13 e i 18 anni in tre laboratori realizzati insieme agli artisti Ruggge, Alvvino e Giacomo Covacich. Attraverso la costruzione di maschere, la cianotipia e il collage, i partecipanti sono stati invitati a mettere in relazione il proprio mondo interiore con gli ecosistemi che li circonda, intrecciando il ricordo di Vaia con riflessioni, confessioni e sogni. There’s No Calm After the Storm. Sperimentazioni visive insieme alle comunità colpite da Vaia prosegue la ricerca visiva di de Mayda, integrandola con gli sguardi e le prospettive dei più giovani emersi nel corso dei laboratori. Il progetto approfondisce in questo modo i processi di riparazione e le diverse modalità di reazione alle trasformazioni sociali ed ecologiche innescate dalla tempesta.

Eight years after Storm Vaia, photographer Matteo de Mayda and writer Cosimo Bizzarri returned to the communities affected by the disaster, creating space and providing tools for residents to tell their own stories and portray the places they call home. In 2026, with the support of the Premio Basilico, de Mayda and Bizzarri brought together around fifty teenagers aged 13 to 18 for three workshops developed in collaboration with artists Ruggge, Alvvino and Giacomo Covacich. Through mask-making, cyanotype and collage, participants explored the connections between their inner worlds and the ecosystems around them, weaving memories of Vaia together with personal reflections, confessions and dreams. There’s No Calm After the Storm. Visual Experiments Together with Communities Hit by Vaia extends de Mayda’s ongoing visual research, bringing it into dialogue with the perspectives and ways of seeing that emerged among younger generations during the workshops.  The project explores the processes of repair and how communities respond to the social and ecological changes triggered by the storm.
